Pre-Tech Foundations
Introductory Pre-Tech Foundation (PTF) Classes
Classes meet 80 minutes every other day for one semester and are designated to help 9th and 10th grade students investigate career pathways. 11th and 12th grade students may enroll when space is available.
PTF- Animal Science (.5 science credit)
Explore various aspects of animal health and sanitation, cellular growth and maintenance, breeding and genetics, anatomy and physiology, and scientific thinking and methods. Gain knowledge and skills through direct instruction, labs, and experiential study with live animals. This course is part of the Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources and Health Career Pathways.
PTF- Creating & Game Design With Code (.5 elective credit)
Discover essential 21st century skills of coding, problem solving, digital citizenship, and foundational computer science concepts. This course is part of the Information Technology Career Pathway.
PTF- Culinary Arts (.5 elective credit)
Explore the foundational techniques of the food service industry including sanitation and safety, breakfast production, yeast and doughs, and desserts. Study and work in our professional kitchen and restaurant environment as well as continuing education in Culinary Arts. This course is part of the Hospitality and Tourism Career Pathway.
PTF-Discovery Lab (.5 elective credit)
Create, design and build projects to explore and apply basic math and science principles by experimenting with numerous technologies, tools and methods in the lab, including 3D printing, programming, electronics, and automated design tools. This course is part of the Engineering and Technology Career Pathway.
PTF- Furniture And Cabinetmaking (.5 elective or fine arts credit)
Develop practical problem solving abilities related to woodworking and construction projects while integrating knowledge from a variety of sources and technical fields. Content will include the physical properties of wood, basic hand tools, power tools, design process, abrasives, finishing process and safety. This course is part of the Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources Career Pathway.
PTF- Introduction To Marketing (.5 elective credit)
Students learn about basic foundational marketing concepts through the process of creating their own business idea. Projects include, but are not limited to, advertisements, website design, business logos, product prototyping, and macro environment analysis. This course is part of the Marketing, Sales and Service Career Pathway.
PTF-Introduction To Careers And Pathway (.5 elective credit)
Learn about all programs available at the North Country Career Center and the post-secondary education required for certain occupations. Gain a better sense of what career and courses to pursue and where personal strengths and challenges intersect with dreams for the future. Improve verbal communication skills and begin to learn advocacy in preparation for an academic and professional future.
PTF- Metalworking Technology (.5 elective or fine arts credit)
Explore technological processes and problem solving methods related to metalworking. Integrate knowledge from a variety of sources and technical fields. Content will include the steel making process, structural-design process, material testing, basic hand tools, sheet-metal work and resistance spot welding. This course is part of the Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources Career Pathway
PTF- Environmental Conservation (.5 science credit)
Learn about animals, plants, the Earth and how to protect and cultivate the environment. Applied learning gives students authentic scientific experiences by conducting in-depth investigations inside and outside the classroom. Students must be able to work in all weather conditions. This course is part of the Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources Career Pathway.
PTF-Prototyping And Design (.5 elective credit)
Learn about the innovative way of designing and creating with prototyping technology. Students will get an introduction to design concepts, 3D printing, CNC mills, laser engraving and more. Industry level software will be used for control and design. This experiential class involves measuring, drawing, computer literacy, machine learning, and interactive career exploration. This class will prepare students for success in any design, architectural, or engineering program. This course is part of the Engineering and Technology Career Pathway.
PTF- Wiring And Plumbing (.5 elective credit)
An introduction to career possibilities as a plumber or an electrician. Topics will include safety procedures and the proper use of tools. The class will include labs in the installation plumbing fixtures, water supply lines, electrical switches, and various other fixtures. This course is part of the Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources Career Pathway.
